He was Ar-Roimi (الرَّيْمِيُّ), born about 34 years after the death of An-Nawawi. Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani considered him a faqih of Asy-Syafi’i school, whose the depth of knowledge was apparent from his ability to write explanatory books of Asy-Syirozi’s work called At-Tanbih within 24 volumes, and then were presented to one of the governments of his era, and as a reward, he received 24,000 dinars!
However, there was one of his habits that should not worthy to be emulated, namely insulting and looking down upon An-Nawawi. This habit is so well-known and recognised by biographers.
Surprisingly, when he died in 791 AH, someone saw that his tongue was stuck out and blackened!
And not just that, there was even a cat then came grabbing it, biting it, making it come off and taking it away!
People considered that the incident was one of the signs of Allah because of his habit of often denouncing and looking down upon An-Nawawi.
Treating people who are highly-presupposed of being Allah’s lovers should be in an extra-careful way. If you get the wrong attitude, then Allah himself will act and make it an unforgettable and frightening history for people who still have faith. Allah says in the hadith Qudsi,
مَنْ عَادَى لِي وَلِيًّا فَقَدْ آذَنْتُهُ بِالْحَرْبِ (صحيح البخاري (20/ 158)
meaning,
“Whoever is hostile to my wali, truly I have declared war on him!” (H.R. Al-Bukhari)
